The coronavirus outbreak which began in China last year has now spread to 213 countries, killing over 940,000 people to date. The World Health Organization declared it a pandemic on March 11, 2020. In Nigeria, a total of 56,000 cases have been confirmed. As Nigeria continues to put in place measures to mitigate the spread of the infection, strong data, information and logistics systems are key to ensure strong and effective epidemiological analyses, forecasting and improved risk communication and logistics planning. eHealth Africa is supporting the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control to respond to the COVID-19 outbreak, by improving data and logistics management through a variety of interventions:

  • Deploy eHA’s Logistics Management Information System (LoMIS) at NCDC to increase visibility of COVID-19 commodity stock management.

  • Develop COVID-19 IPC eLearning Training Materials and upload to accessible LMS to improve health workers’ access to training which will improve their capacity to practice effective IPC measures.

  • Develop a case screening and reporting system utilizing interactive voice response technology to identify potential COVID-19 cases from incoming international travelers.

  • Deployment of a Customized Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to improve COVID-19 sample management at the National Reference Laboratory.

  • Support the Set-up & Management of Kano State’s COVID-19 Call Center to effectively manage incoming reports of COVID-19 cases.

eHA's role

  • Developed an NCDC-specific LoMIS dashboard for real-time reporting of COVID-19 health commodities.

  • Imported COVID-19 stock data into LoMIS to feed the reporting dashboard and harmonize with the physical stock count of commodities received.

  • Developed an automated system that can call thousands of contacts daily to identify suspected COVID-19 cases.

  • Developed dashboard for tracking urgent cases for follow-up.

  • Trained relevant personnel at NCDC to man and utilize the automated case screening and reporting system.

  • Customization of open source LIMS to support automated and streamlined NRL workflows including sample reception/registration, processing and analysis, results visualization and sample storage and archiving.

  • Training for lab personnel and development of user manuals.

  • Pilot deployment in NRL.

  • Procurement and installation of IT equipment at the call center.

  • Set-up and management of toll-free and 0800COVIDKN smart lines.

  • Training for all assigned agents and supervisors at the call center.
