The consistent demand for blood and blood products without equivalent supply has remained a major challenge. The World Health Organisation last year reported that there is a major discrepancy in the level of access to blood between low- and high-income countries. Specifically, Of the 118.5 million blood donations collected globally, 40% of these are collected in high-income countries, home to 16% of the world’s population.
In its status report on Blood Availability, Safety and Quality, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said, millions of mothers and children are still dying every year because of severe anemia due to insufficient blood supply. The lack of blood to treat severe perinatal hemorrhage contributes to up to 72% of maternal deaths, as confirmed by WHO.
In recent times, the incorporation of technology, such as mobile applications, digital innovation, and mixed reality experiences, has significantly transformed traditional strategies and approaches to blood donation and management systems.
